About

Singaporean painter and NAFA alumnus, Yeo Hoe Koon first trained at NAFA from 1955 to 1957 then at the famed École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1959.  The Western art movements in Europe in the 1950s and 60s had left a deep impression on him, and it was then, that he sought to express his roots as a Chinese through his vocabulary of abstraction, integrating the spirit of traditional Chinese culture with Western forms. Well into his 80s, Yeo has been a painter for more than six decades and is adept at oil, acrylic and Chinese ink painting.

Yeo titles his works simply, allowing the viewer to freely imagine and ascribe their interpretations to what is before them. Priortisiting colour and expression over recognisable subject matter, the vibrant hues and swirling abstract forms suggest vitality, growth and change. In a world that is chaotic and uncertain, with art, the artist believes there is beauty and hope, even in the midst of great change.
