About Sim Pang Liang

Sim Pang Liang, inspired by Chen Chong Swee and refined by the tutelage of Cheong Soo Pieng, creates a symphony of contemporary style, integrating first-generation ink visionaries' influences. Graduating in painting from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1961, he joined the Modern Art Society in 1963, exploring modern and abstract art dimensions. Renowned for innovative takes on classic ink forms, Sim blends calligraphy, ink washes, abstract, and methodical forms, showcasing a wide range of imagery that reflects his progressive artistic outlook.

Departing from grandeur, he portrays everyday life and cultural significance with technical strength, skillfully capturing subtleties in a minimalistic landscape. His simplistic subjects evoke nostalgia for a culture often overlooked in today's globalised world. Through each stroke, he tells stories, representing both skillful process and cultural symbols, preserving a vanishing era. A highly celebrated artist, Sim Pang Liang's modern Chinese ink paintings have been exhibited extensively in Southeast Asia and collected by prestigious institutions including national galleries in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Taipei.
